Houzz's "Kitchen Trends Study" released in Oct 2013, top flooring choices are hardwood and tile.

I have kept the kitchen floor that came with my house all three times.  2 wood floors (this house parquet), and 1 tile floor.  I really enjoyed how indestructible my tile floor was in our last house!  Every gap and scratch in our wood floors makes me a little sad when I am sweeping or mopping the kitchen.  The look of wood floors is so charming, that many of us put these feelings aside and put wood floor in anyway.

Zillow Diggs Home Design Trend Report 2014 predicts that wood kitchen floors will lighten up from the dark espresso that's been so popular for the last 15 years.

In an article called "What's In, What's Out for Kitchens 2014", NYC designer John Willey of the residential design firm Willey Design LLC explains that dark dark floors "can show more scratches and dust...but a paler wood can help disguise a lot of that."  Willey likes white oak (not red oak) because it can take any color stain.  Most wood species can look very different, depending on the stain applied.  Each of these kitchens have white oak floors, but have totally different colors:

I'm noticing that the darker the wood floor, the lighter your counters and backsplash can be:

Medium light wood floors might be more timeless, and a great way to mix in some color on the island cabinets, or some grey/stainless steel elements:

Tile can be just as beautiful, and tile doesn't buckle or warp with water damage like a hardwood floor does (if you must have wood flooring, don't get hardwood, get engineered wood instead for this reason):
